Office data cabling

Data Cabling Checklist for Office Fitouts

Data cabling is one of the easiest parts of an office fitout to under-scope. Once walls, desks and ceilings are finished, adding missed points becomes harder and more expensive.

This checklist helps identify the common data, WiFi, comms rack and network cabling requirements for commercial office fitouts.

Cabling areas to review

  • Workstations and desks
  • Meeting rooms and AV
  • WiFi access points
  • Printers and shared equipment
  • Comms rack and patching
Checklist

Office data cabling items to include

Use this checklist during design or before finalising the electrical and communications scope.

01

Desk data points

Confirm whether each workstation needs one or more data points, phone points, dock connections or spare outlets for future staff changes.

02

WiFi access point cabling

Plan ceiling access point locations with the IT provider so wireless coverage supports open areas, meeting rooms and shared spaces.

03

Meeting rooms

Allow data cabling for displays, video conferencing equipment, room booking panels, table boxes and wireless presentation systems where required.

04

Printers and shared equipment

Do not forget printers, label machines, reception devices, payment terminals, time clocks, kitchen screens or other shared equipment.

05

Security and cameras

Networked CCTV, access control and intercom devices often need data cabling or network pathways coordinated with the security system.

06

Comms rack and patching

Confirm rack size, patch panel capacity, switch space, UPS allowance, ventilation and cable management before installation.

Testing

Testing and labelling matter after the install

The cabling is only useful if it can be identified, patched and supported later.

Every data point should be labelled in a way that matches the patch panel and rack layout. Poor labelling makes future moves, additions and fault finding more difficult for the IT provider.

EDN uses DSX-8000 cable testing and certification equipment to support structured cabling outcomes and documentation where required.

Good handover includes

  • Logical outlet labels
  • Matching patch panel labels
  • Cable test records where required
  • Rack and patching organisation
  • Clear separation from other services where needed
Future capacity

Allow for the office changing after handover

A cabling design should consider staff growth, technology changes and minor office reconfigurations.

A

Spare points

Spare data points can reduce the need for disruptive works when staff numbers or desk layouts change.

B

Spare rack capacity

Allow rack and patch panel capacity for additional switches, circuits, devices and future cabling.

C

Pathways for future works

Cable tray, ceiling access and pathways should support future additions where practical.

Common questions

FAQs

Is Cat6 or Cat6A better for an office?

The right cabling category depends on project requirements, network expectations, budget and warranty objectives. EDN can advise during scoping.

Should WiFi access point cabling be installed before the IT provider chooses access points?

The IT provider should ideally confirm access point locations and quantities early, but cabling pathways still need to be coordinated with the fitout.

Can EDN provide Molex Certified cabling?

Yes. EDN is Molex Certified and can support Molex structured cabling outcomes and warranty pathways where applicable.

Does EDN test data cabling?

Yes. EDN uses DSX-8000 testing and certification equipment to support commercial cabling projects.
